GRS Post-consumer Waste Recycled Polyester
“We focus on crafting garments from sustainable and environmentally friendly materials, with a view to educating and engaging children on best environmental practice. With every new collection we are committed to moving one step closer to sustainability.”
- We love the peach-soft shell of our rainwear and parkas. It contradicts the assumption that wet-weather wear is heavy and uncomfortable; at Töastie we bring you softness and easy movement, whilst being fully waterproof.
Plastic bottles are collected, preventing them from piling up on landfills and reduces plastic waste in our oceans. These bottles are compressed and then sent to a yarn factory. Here, they are shredded, thoroughly cleaned, then melted and spun into yarn. This yarn is recycled polyester, which is turned into the fabric that your children wear today. We are proud to have sourced the most beautifully soft, yet extremely hard-wearing and durable recycled polyester.
By choosing to use recycled polyester we are using up resources which are already in circulation and preventing new fossil fuels from being extracted. By ensuring recycled polyester is PET certified means that the plastic is post-consumer waste and not plastic produced specifically to be made into recycled polyester. It is deeply ironic and truly devastating that when recycled polyester is not certified post-consumer waste, it may have been derived this way.
Our recycled polyester is Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certified.
On average, each of our Classic Raincoats are made out of 15 plastic bottles, our Dungarees are made from 7 plastic bottles and our North Star Parka’s are made from 17 plastic bottles.
- Our EcoReversible® range uses a beautifully soft and light fill called Sorona®, which mimics the qualities found in genuine down, whilst offering an animal-friendly alternative.
The Sorona® fill is 60% natural (renewable) corn fibre and 40% recycled polyester (post-consumer waste). As the process used to create the fill is a largely biological one as opposed to a chemical one, the dependency on oil is far less than a typical polyester fill, meaning greatly reduced GHG emissions. (For example, 63% less CO2 emissions are created in the production of Sorona fibre in comparison to regular polyester fills.)
It is extremely important to us that our products perform, and that a child is free to engage in nature without restriction, (for example, the fill must be breathable so a child does not feel too hot, it must also be light so they do not feel weighed down.) The Sorona® blend is the closest alternative to real down we have come across in terms of performance and is the only option that is procured from a renewable and sustainable source. It is also perfectly breathable and washable.
Re:Down® Recycled Down
Re:Down® collects post-consumer waste from partners that share their same social values and transparency. The product collected is largely bedding, where the fabric holding the down is damaged, yet the feathers themselves remain in perfect condition.
- As of 2021 our down products will only feature Re:Down® recycled down. Down is the most beautifully light, insulating, breathable and versatile product. It is naturally thermo-regulating, which means it will keep you warm in the cold, yet cool in the warm.
Re:Down® uses the most environmentally friendly methods to regenerate the down and feathers. The feathers are washed using thermal water, which ultimately goes back through a recycling process and into the earth as clean drinking water.
No chemicals are used in the cleaning process, instead the down and feathers are washed using regular soap, sterilised at an extremely high temperate and given a water-resistant ecological FC free finish.
The structure of the down provides warmth by creating thousands of tiny air pockets from the interlocking fibres, whilst also allowing unwanted moisture to escape from being trapped. Real down provides three times the insulation of synthetic down and is the most lightweight option, above and beyond any man-made fibres, on the market at present. Down retains its loft and shape, ensuring our jackets are as light and puffy to the eye as they are to the touch. We are passionate about the source of our down and only use Responsibly Sourced Down in our outerwear.
